Responsibilities QUALIFICATIONS: Expert working knowledge of mining methods utilizing continuous mining machinery. Knowledge of mining safety principles and Federal Mine Health and Safety Administration regulations and policies. Strong business background and supervisory experience are essential. Bachelor's Degree in mine engineering or related engineering discipline plus eight to ten years of related mining experience with functional knowledge of other engineering disciplines desired. Technical knowledge of mine roof control and ventilation principles. Ability to communicate effectively and influence all mine personnel.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for directing the activities of the mine operations which includes production, maintenance, engineering and support personnel to safely provide the ore requirements of the Refinery, with the best possible quality (grade, size consistency, trash free) in a timely manner and at the lowest attainable cost, while conserving the natural resource and obtaining a long range balance of production costs. Position is responsible for commitment to the quality management system through support of quality initiatives and attendance and monitoring of quality management system reviews.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan, schedule, organize, direct and control mining operations to meet refinery needs. Coordinate activities of mine production, tailings disposal, maintenance and engineering. Establish and monitor safe operating procedures and maintain good regulatory relations. 20%
Responsible for budgeting mining expenses and control of costs to meet the budget. Review cost reports, royalty payment reports, production reports, etc., as needed. 5%
Direct and coordinate both long and short range planning of mining operation. Oversee research and detail engineering studies necessary for continual process improvement 20%
Develop goals and objectives for the mine organization, develop performance matrices and monitor performance.10%
Identify capital needs, both maintenance and process enhancements, prioritize, prepare appropriation requests with sound financial analysis, oversee project design and execution.15%
Maintain communication at all levels and maintain good relationships with employees, supervisors, other operating departments, and support regulatory agencies, company officials, visitors, etc. 15%
Share plant management staff responsibilities in providing overall plant direction including TQM principles, ISO review, establish policies and procedures, participation on employee relations and safety committees, personnel development programs, etc. 10% Establish and maintain good governmental community relations.

Challenges: The primary challenge of this function is to instill a philosophy of continuous improvement in the workforce and to lead implementation of positive changes. Encourage experienced employees to make decisions and work toward more self-directed workforce. Interactions: Develop supervisory personnel in both leadership and technical skills. Identify strengths and weaknesses of all employees and tailor individual training for maximum development.
Business Environment: Significant challenges will be to maintain effective communications to keep all shift and day crews adequately informed, as well as significant management exposure in the work areas. Matrix system must be developed that will convey to everyone the mine's primary goals and objectives and team performance against these goals.
